Blog Series: What are the benefits of Upcycled Fashion? Part 2 - Sustainable Consumerism

This is the second post in our series about Upcycled Fashion and what are the benefits. To begin with: What is upcycled fashion? Upcycled fashion is a sustainable approach to clothing design that involves repurposing and reimagining old, worn-out, or discarded garments and materials to create new, stylish pieces. Unlike traditional recycling, which usually breaks down items into raw materials, upcycling focuses on improving and transforming existing materials, giving them a second life while reducing waste.

The core idea behind upcycled fashion is to reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry by diverting textiles from landfills and reducing the need for new resources, like raw fabric and dyes. Instead of buying new, we work with pre-loved or unused garments, salvaging fabrics, buttons, zippers, and other elements to create something fresh and unique.

For example - the jacket shown above was stained and dingy, so we gave it a fun and vibrant redye so it can still be worn and loved!

In our previous blog post in this series, we discussed what we consider to be the first benefit of upcycling clothes: It reduces the environmental harm of the fashion industry. So when brands and manufacturers choose to create upcycled fashion, they eliminate the need to source materials made from virgin raw materials. This eliminates approximately 65% of harmful carbon emissions from the supply chain!

But what about YOU the end customer? When you upcycle your clothes or choose to purchase upcycled fashion from brands - then YOU are doing your part to reduce the problems of overconsumption from mass consumerism. And YOU are telling the industry that you want and demand MORE upcycled fashion!

When You Choose Upcycled Fashion You Are Supporting Sustainable Consumerism!

Upcycled fashion is a direct response to the harmful effects of fast fashion, where mass production and consumption result in the creation of cheap, low-quality clothing that is often discarded after only a few uses. By choosing upcycled and refurbished fashion, you're supporting a more sustainable, circular approach to consumerism. You're not only reusing and recycling clothes but also supporting artisans, small businesses, and eco-conscious designers who are committed to creating fashion with a smaller environmental footprint.

This shift toward sustainability is also helping to change the way people think about clothing. It encourages a mindset of buying less, cherishing more, and rethinking the lifecycle of our clothes—from production to disposal.
